The bbPress plugin is working fine, at least for now, just by changing a line of code and reverting the version needed from 5.0 to 4.9.

Hi @ricroma, and welcome. 
While the plugin may work by changing the version number, that has the unintended side-effect of causing the plugin to never receive any updates. This might be fine, but, you will have to deal with any security issues on your own, should any arise. This is not to discourage you from using the plugin; just to inform you of what it will entail to safely use it under this circumstance.
