functionality like Broken Link Checker , but perhaps simplified to only display broken links with a link to the affected post/page
hopefully could be developed with an API so it could be extended to be much more powerful via a plugin

Running such functionality on every site would bring many of them to a crawl, if not a halt, because it’s very resource-intensive. This is definitely plugin territory.

As mentioned, this is plugin functionality and not in line with making the core slim.
