I have a proof-of-concept plugin built with vanilla JS, which allows the user to resize the Customizer sidebar/pane. See it in action below:

Update: This plugin will not go ahead, as it is based on obsolete technology (e.g. BackboneJS).
my question is: when we replace backbone in the future could we decide to keep same UI in customizer with a vanilla JS engine to make it work and use your resizing to have a real working preview instead of the very wonky one we get now in the customizer that never align to what is real? If yes it has my vote…
Yes, my plan is to replicate it (almost) identically.
