It looks to me like a recent version of Discourse may have fixed this.
Maybe someone who still has unread notifications for the latest posts in Marketing Meeting Transcript: July 28, 2020 - #3 by james can confirm, I split a post there out to a new thread and the notifications updated correctly for me.
