Are these instructions any help:
If you plan to install more sites on that server I suggest installing Virtualmin and then install ClassicPress from there.
@tpnsolutions maybe you can add some instructions to the page linked above.
@agalande
Do you have the web services (LAMP Stack) installed?
Please give us some more background, ClassicPress requires a working web server before it can be installed.
To answer some other questions - I don’t have anything installed on the server other than Ubuntu 24 LTS.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I should have probably added some context. Here’s what I am trying to do -
I want to build lightweight sites for a few non-profit organizations. The goal is to have as low a hosting cost per month as possible. I don’t expect to have significant traffic on these either.
The reason I am looking to install things from scratch is I am hoping I can tweak things more closely and can control everything getting installed on the server. I am hoping to not run anything extra on the server other than these sites so squeeze as much out of it as possible
I am happy to put the documentation/script together and share with the community here if anybody else also would find it useful.
You have (at least) 2 choices.
Self hosting, which is essentially free, but more work and requires either experience with hosting or a good understanding of how it works.
I run a small server farm, so can help with self hosting.
or
A good hosting service, though in almost every case they will decide how things are configured.
That said, even low cost hosting services should be able to run ClassicPress, you have several options on how you could run multiple sites based on what your hosting service provides.
Thanks. I certainly want to go with the first option as one part of doing this volunteer work for them is to also learn about the space a little. I got a VPS host to play with but would definitely reach out to explore other hosting options.
If you have a VPS with Ubuntu, then you should be able to set that up however you want. If it is a fresh install, you can try something like FastPanel, which I think is easier to learn than virtualmin or other control panels - maybe check the sites for those two and other control panel software to see what you might like best. That route is easier than installing all the individual components via APT.
I created a helper script to download and install ClassicPress on a fresh Ubuntu install. Please find it here - ClassicPressHelperScripts/setup_classicpress.sh at 59b6ea50e02aa1528bbb0dda0a2d96eab6c62745 · aeykaygee/ClassicPressHelperScripts · GitHub. Feel free to recommend changes/updates if you end up using it.
